About Northwoods National Scenic Riverway

The Northwoods National Scenic Riverway encompasses 230 miles of two free-flowing rivers—the Namekagon and the St. Croix—that wind through northern Wisconsin and extend into parts of Minnesota. These rivers represent some of the best remaining examples of undammed, clean, coldwater streams in the Midwest, fostering a vital habitat for native fish species, including smallmouth bass, muskellunge, and trout. Surrounding the rivers, the landscape features mixed hardwood and conifer forests, wetlands, and rocky outcrops that support diverse wildlife such as black bears, white-tailed deer, otters, and over 200 bird species. Established in 1968, the Riverway preserves water quality and natural riverbanks while providing opportunities for outdoor recreation including canoeing, kayaking, fishing, camping, and hiking. Visitors can explore numerous access points and campgrounds, many tucked into forested settings with river views. The Riverway is especially popular during the summer for paddling and fishing, while fall draws visitors to admire the vibrant foliage along the water. Winter activities include cross-country skiing and snowshoeing on nearby trails. Key landmarks include several historic logging campsites and remnants of Native American heritage sites. The Northwoods National Scenic Riverway remains a cherished refuge for nature lovers seeking solitude, wildlife encounters, and high-quality water recreation amidst a largely undeveloped river corridor.
